In early 2020, scouts from Riverview Cub Scout Pack 1659 got an up-close and personal look at Riverview Land Preserve’s massive new refuse compactor.

As part of their tour of the solid waste landfill facility, the scouts were introduced to the RLP’s new 123,000-pound BOMAG Refuse Compactor. The compactor would soon be in service on the nearby hill, compacting waste materials with its 576-horsepower turbo diesel engine and 17-foot dozer blade.

Assistant City Manager Jeff Dobek and other team members explained the facility’s purpose and community recycling program to the scouts. Dobek is currently spearheading other important capital investments in equipment at RLP including a Liebherr Loader and Liebherr Bulldozer to support operations in 2020 and beyond.

Dobek further stated, “Have the scouts and other school groups come to RLP is really exciting. They have unique, up close experiences while learning about recycling and managing waste. I love helping people understand the operations, infrastructure and true engineering marvels of a modern-day landfill.”

The RLP is a Michigan licensed solid waste landfill facility, owned and operated by the City of Riverview since 1968. The facility design and operation meet or exceed federal subtitle D and Michigan regulations, making it possible to manage a variety of non-hazardous solid wastes in an environmentally responsible manner.

We’re excited to welcome virtual visitors to Riverview Land Preserve’s (RLP) new website.

I’m Jeff Dobek, the City of Riverview’s new Assistant City Manager; and, I oversee the Land Preserve, which includes operations as well as working with the Downriver community and local residents. During my first few months in the new position I concentrated on improving operations, and now I’m eager to interact with our Downriver citizens and be a good neighbor.

It’s a new year, and the new website platform is just one of the different and exciting things going on at RLP. While my team spends a lot of time managing waste materials, we’re making time to strengthen community partnerships and open lines of communications. We all are very committed to working with local communities and residents to help them understand the operations and local infrastructure benefits of a modern-day landfill.

Downriver citizens can expect to see more communications about happenings at RLP in the coming months – some ideas are in the works, and some are active right now:

  • Website – Our new website offers more real-time information and ways to connect with RLP.
  • Facebook – RLP’s newly launched Facebook page will help us show day-to-day activities at RLP. Please take a moment to connect with us. (link)
  • E-Newsletter – Each quarter, we will produce an e-newsletter to showcase recent events at RLP, key staff, and important information about the Land Preserve.
  • Staff – I’m not the only new employee around here. Check out the news section (link) of our website to read more about our new Sales & Marketing Manager Jeff Kugelman.
  • Education Activities – RLP will serve as an educational resource for school and civic groups. Our facility should serve as a classroom. Whether it’s a school fieldtrip, a visit from a local Boy Scout Troop, or a one-on-one tour … it’s critical to our mission to help our youth learn first-hand about the importance of recycling at home and the role of landfills when it comes to managing waste.
  • Capital Investments – We’ll keep you in-the-know about important capital investments in equipment such as our new BOMAG Compactor, Liebherr Loader and Liebherr Bulldozer to support operations in 2020 and beyond.

To sum things up, we are going to be sharing a lot more about happenings at RLP, and we are going to spend more time getting to know customers like you and forming community partnerships.

There is a lot more to Riverview Land Preserve – and my team of 30+ employees – than managing waste materials. That’s just the beginning of our story.

Thank you again for checking out our new website!

Dobek named Assistant City Manager; and, Jeff Kugelman selected Sales & Marketing Manager

Riverview, MI. (February 2020) – After an extensive recruitment process, the City of Riverview has chosen Jeff Dobek as its next Assistant City Manager.

In his new role, Dobek will be responsible for the City’s business enterprise operations – including Riverview Land Preserve and Riverview Highlands Golf Course, proposed real estate development for city-owned properties, investment appraisal and more. Previously, Dobek served as the Director of Golf, Parks, and Recreation for the City of Taylor for nearly 10 years.

“With more than 25 years of financial and operations management experience, Jeff brings much expertise to his position,” said Douglas Drysdale, City Manager of Riverview. “We have specifically charged Jeff with directing all things that relate to the Land Preserve and that includes operations as well as community relations. While operating a safe landfill under the strictest state and federal standards, Jeff will be interacting and communicating with our neighboring communities. It’s a new year, and we’re excited to have new passionate leadership in Jeff Dobek and Jeff Kugelman.”

Jeff Kugelman joined the City of Riverview as Sales & Marketing Manager in mid-2019. In his new position, Kugelman will rely on two decades of industry experience working for some of the nation’s most recognized consumer packaged goods companies; The Coca-Cola Company, and the Wrigley-MARS Company, working in sales, brand marketing, management, and operations capacities.

Dobek and Kugelman are active in the community and have already started strengthening community partnerships and opening lines of communications. Dobek said, “I’m excited about this new position. Working with local communities and helping them understand the operations and local infrastructure benefits of a modern-day landfill – such as the engineering marvels – is equally important to me as ensuring the environmental integrity of our natural resources. During my first few months in the new position I concentrated on improving operations, and now I’m eager to interact with our Downriver citizens and be a good neighbor.”

Since joining the City, Dobek updated Riverview Land Preserve’s working business model while emphasizing strict operating procedures to meet, and exceed, EPA regulations to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public. He has encouraged and facilitated all employees working together through scheduled communicated procedures resulting in measurable outcomes in productivity and compliance. Additionally, Dobek has spearheaded important capital investments in equipment such as a BOMAG Compactor, Liebherr Loader and Liebherr Bulldozer to support operations in 2020 and beyond.

Dobek continued, “Downriver citizens can expect to see more communications about the Land Preserve in the coming months … they will likely see a newsletter, educational events in partnership with schools hosted at the Land Preserve and even social media activity.”

Dobek is a Certified Public Accountant – State of Michigan, and a Chartered Global Management Accountant – American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). In 1987, he graduated from the United States International University in San Diego, California with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting.

Kugelman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan in 1995.

“The City is pleased to bring Jeff Dobek and Jeff Kugelman on board. They each bring reputations of integrity, collaboration and community orientation to our city management. These two gentlemen will be very present in the Downriver communities,” said Drysdale.
